Check Engine Light Reset Guide: Easy Tips for Dealing with Vehicle Trouble

The check engine light comes on when there is a problem with the engine or emissions control system. In this case, you need to use a scanner to scan the fault code to determine the reason why the fault light is on. Once you’ve solved the problem, you can reset them. This article will tell you how to reset your car’s check engine light.

Use a Scanner

Connect the scanner to the OBD onboard diagnostic interface under the steering wheel. Turn on the ignition. Turn off all accessories.

Press the “Analyze” button on the scanner to analyze the engine’s fault codes. To be on the safe side, write down the fault codes in order for future inspection and maintenance.

Press the “Clear” button on the scanner to clear the fault code. This step can turn off the fault light. Some scanners come with a freeze fault status function, which records the data collected by the sensor. When the fault code is cleared, the data file will also disappear.

  • Some scanners have an automatic mode with buttons that say “Yes” or “Delete,” which both mean “clear.”

Clear Fault Codes (Traditional Method)

Disconnect the battery and unplug the positive and negative cables. Use a wrench to remove the cable if necessary.

Keep pressing the speaker for 30 seconds to consume the remaining power in the capacitor.

Wait 15 minutes before reconnecting the battery. After clearing the fault code, the fault light will go out. This method may not be useful for some on-board computer systems. If the fault light does not go out after disconnecting the battery, it means the car has a serious fault and needs repair.

Tips

  • Clearing the fault code by disconnecting the battery will also clear the data of other on-board devices. Try not to do this.
  • The emissions detector will register that you have reset it, and the car will not pass the emissions test. Before conducting the exhaust gas test, the car must be driven for at least 320 kilometers.
  • If trouble codes keep appearing and you don’t know what to do, you need to go to a repair shop. An experienced mechanical technician can help you inspect your car and reset your trouble light.
  • Responsible auto repair shops will not reset the malfunction light if the problem is not resolved, as that is illegal. This can only be done if necessary after completing the diagnostic process and determining the fault.
  • A check engine light coming on indicates a problem with the car. It is unsafe to perform a reset without knowing the problem.
