How to Change the Battery of a Remote Control Key

No matter what kind of remote control key it is, changing the battery is not difficult, and it usually only takes a few minutes to do it. The opening methods of different remote control keys and the battery models inside will be slightly different. Use a tool to pry open the remote control key shell, replace the battery, and then it can be used normally.

Turn on the Remote Control

If the key is still in the remote control, remove it first. Different remote control keys have different key removal methods. Take a car remote control key for example. When not in use, the key is usually folded inside the remote control. At this time, you have to open the key before you can remove it. The key on some remote control keys can be removed directly, usually by pulling it out or popping it out.

  • Some keys can be removed from the remote control. Press the small button on the top of the remote control, and then you can pull out the key.
  • Some keys can be ejected from the remote control. You can press the eject button on the remote, or pull the key outward.

Unscrew the screw on the back of the remote control. Turn the remote control over and you can see one or several screws. These screws are relatively small, so use a small Phillips screwdriver to tighten them. Unscrew the screw in a counter-clockwise direction, being careful not to loosen the screw head.

  • Put the screws in a safe place, such as in a ziplock bag or cup, to avoid losing them.

If there is a gap like a card slot on the side of the remote control, you can insert a coin into it and then pry open the remote control casing. Most remote controls have a wide slit on the side that you can insert a coin or flat-blade screwdriver into and pry open the remote casing.

  • When prying with a screwdriver, pry open the side seams on all four sides of the remote control to make it easier to open. If you only pry in one place, it may not be that easy to pry open.

Replace the Battery

Use a screwdriver to pry out the battery. The battery is usually located in the middle of the remote control. It is silver and looks like a coin. You can try digging it out with your fingers, but if that doesn’t work, try prying it out with a flathead screwdriver or a paper clip. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver under the battery and gently pry upward.

  • Some remote controls may have a latch on the battery. Use a screwdriver to gently pry up the latch, and then you can remove the battery. Be careful not to break the buckle when prying.

Install new batteries. Install new batteries into the battery compartment. Check the positive and negative battery installation diagram on the remote control. Generally, the positive terminal is facing up. Then just put the battery in.

  • Remote controls generally use small button batteries, such as CR2025 or CR2032. These batteries are sold in supermarkets, hardware stores, and auto parts stores.
  • If you want to know which battery is used in the remote control, you can read the relevant content in the manual.

Assemble the remote control case. Buckle up the remote control casing to ensure that the battery does not shake. Then put the screws on and tighten them clockwise.

Check the remote control key. If it is a car remote control key, point it towards the car and try to see if it works. Generally speaking, there will be no problem. If it doesn’t work, the battery may have the positive and negative poles reversed. You need to turn the remote control back on to check. If it still doesn’t work, the remote may be broken.

  • You can go to a 4S store or a professional car unlocker to replace the remote control. You can also buy a new remote control and flash the program yourself.

Tips

Since there are many types of key fobs, the process for replacing the battery may vary slightly. If there is anything you don’t understand, you can read the manual or look for relevant information on the remote control manufacturer’s website.
